History
The area that is now Elmira Heights was first settled in the late 1700s. The village was incorporated in 1891. The village was named after the nearby city of Elmira.

Economy
The economy of Elmira Heights is largely based on manufacturing and retail. The village is home to several manufacturing companies, including Elmira Machine Works, which produces industrial machinery, and Elmira Stove Works, which produces wood and gas stoves. The village also has several retail stores, including a grocery store, a hardware store, and a pharmacy.
Demographics
As of the census of 2000, there were 2,902 people, 1,213 households, and 790 families residing in the village. The population density was 2,400.2 people per square mile (926.2/km2). There were 1,269 housing units at an average density of 1,039.2 per square mile (400.7/km2). The racial makeup of the village was 97.45% White, 0.90% African American, 0.17% Native American, 0.48% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 0.17% from other races, and 0.80% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.90% of the population.
There were 1,213 households, out of which 28.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 50.2% were married couples living together, 11.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 34.3% were non-families. 29.7% of all households were made up of individuals, and 14.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.40 and the average family size was 2.96.
In the village, the population was spread out, with 23.2% under the age of 18, 6.7% from 18 to 24, 28.2% from 25 to 44, 22.7% from 45 to 64, and 19.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 40 years. For every 100 females, there were 90.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 86.2 males.
The median income for a household in the village was $37,917, and the median income for a family was $45,938. Males had a median income of $35,000 versus $25,000 for females. The per capita income for the village was $19,845.
