East Islip Summary
East Islip is a hamlet and census-designated place (CDP) located in the Town of Islip in Suffolk County, New York, United States. The population was 12,556 at the 2010 census.
History
The area now known as East Islip was originally inhabited by the Secatogue Indians. The first European settlers arrived in the area in the 1650s. The area was originally known as "Great South Bay" and was part of the Town of Islip. In 1876, the area was renamed "East Islip" after the Town of Islip.
Geography
East Islip is located at 40°43'25" North, 73°10'25" West (40.723861, -73.173750). According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 5.2 square miles, of which, 4.9 square miles of it is land and 0.3 square miles of it (5.90%) is water.
Economy
East Islip is home to a variety of businesses, including retail stores, restaurants, and professional services. The hamlet is also home to a number of corporate headquarters, including the headquarters of the Long Island Power Authority.
Demographics
As of the census of 2000, there were 12,556 people, 4,541 households, and 3,541 families residing in the CDP. The population density was 2,541.3 per square mile (981.2/km2). There were 4,637 housing units at an average density of 945.2/sqmi (365.3/km2). The racial makeup of the CDP was 95.45% White, 0.90% African American, 0.05% Native American, 1.90% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 0.76% from other races, and 1.02% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 3.45% of the population.
There were 4,541 households, out of which 37.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 64.2% were married couples living together, 9.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 23.2% were non-families. 19.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 8.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.76 and the average family size was 3.19.
In the CDP, the population was spread out, with 25.7% under the age of 18, 5.3% from 18 to 24, 30.2% from 25 to 44, 25.2% from 45 to 64, and 13.6% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 39 years. For every 100 females, there were 93.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 89.7 males.
The median income for a household in the CDP was $76,945, and the median income for a family was $86,945. Males had a median income of $60,945 versus $41,945 for females. The per capita income for the CDP was $31,945. About 1.7% of families and 2.7% of the population were below the poverty line, including 2.2% of those under age 18 and 4.2% of those age 65 or over.
