Earlville is a small village located in Madison County, New York, United States. The village is situated in the Town of Hamilton, and is located at the intersection of Routes 12 and 20. The population of Earlville was 1,093 at the 2010 census.
History
Earlville was founded in 1817 by John Earl, a Revolutionary War veteran. The village was originally known as "Earl's Corners" and was later renamed Earlville. The village was incorporated in 1848.
In the late 19th century, Earlville was a thriving industrial center, with several factories producing furniture, leather goods, and other products. The village was also home to a number of hotels, stores, and other businesses.
Geography
Earlville is located at 42°54'25" North, 75°25'45" West (42.9069, -75.4292). According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 0.6 square miles (1.6 km2), all of it land.
Economy
Earlville's economy is largely based on agriculture and tourism. The village is home to several farms, as well as a number of small businesses. The village is also home to a number of antique stores, which attract visitors from all over the region.
Demographics
As of the census of 2010, there were 1,093 people, 441 households, and 279 families residing in the village. The population density was 1,822.5 people per square mile (704.3/km2). There were 471 housing units at an average density of 781.7 per square mile (301.7/km2). The racial makeup of the village was 97.2% White, 0.7% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.2% Asian, 0.2% from other races, and 1.7% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.3% of the population.
There were 441 households, out of which 28.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 48.2% were married couples living together, 11.3% had a female householder with no husband present, and 35.7% were non-families. 30.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 14.3% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.47 and the average family size was 3.06.
In the village, the population was spread out, with 24.7% under the age of 18, 7.2% from 18 to 24, 25.7% from 25 to 44, 25.2% from 45 to 64, and 17.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 39 years. For every 100 females, there were 91.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 87.2 males.
The median income for a household in the village was $37,500, and the median income for a family was $45,000. Males had a median income of $31,250 versus $25,000 for females. The per capita income for the village was $17,945.
