Dolgeville Summary
Dolgeville is a village located in Herkimer County, New York, United States. The population was 1,845 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Utica–Rome Metropolitan Statistical Area.
History
The village of Dolgeville was founded in 1845 by German immigrant, John Dolge. Dolge had come to the United States in 1837 and settled in the area in 1841. He purchased a large tract of land and began to develop it into a village. He built a sawmill, gristmill, and a tannery, and the village grew rapidly. By 1845, the village had a post office, a school, and several stores.
In 1848, the village was incorporated as the Village of Dolgeville. The village continued to grow and by the late 19th century, it had become a major center for the production of leather goods. The tanneries and leather goods factories employed hundreds of people and the village prospered.
In the early 20th century, the leather industry began to decline and the village began to decline as well. The tanneries and factories closed and the population began to decline. The village has since become a quiet, rural community.

The average household size was 2.45 and the average family size was 3.02.
In the village, the population was spread out, with 24.2% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 25.7% from 25 to 44, 24.2% from 45 to 64, and 17.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 39 years. For every 100 females, there were 91.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 87.2 males.
The median income for a household in the village was $37,500, and the median income for a family was $45,000. Males had a median income of $31,250 versus $25,000 for females. The per capita income for the village was $17,945.
