Deferiet Summary

Deferiet is a small village located in the town of Wilna in Jefferson County, New York. It is situated on the Black River, which is a tributary of Lake Ontario. The village is located approximately 20 miles north of Watertown, the county seat. Deferiet was founded in 1825 by William Deferiet, a French-Canadian immigrant. The village was originally known as Deferietville, but the name was changed to Deferiet in 1875.

Geography

Deferiet is located at 43°59'N 75°45'W (43.983, -75.75). According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 0.6 square miles (1.6 km2), all of it land.
The village is located on the Black River, which is a tributary of Lake Ontario. The river is used for recreational activities such as fishing and boating. The village is also home to a number of parks, including Deferiet Park, which is located on the banks of the river.

Economy

The economy of Deferiet is largely based on agriculture and tourism. The village is home to several farms, which produce a variety of crops, including corn, soybeans, and hay. The village also has a number of small businesses, including a grocery store, a hardware store, and a restaurant.
Tourism is an important part of the local economy. The village is home to a number of attractions, including the Deferiet Historical Society Museum, which houses artifacts from the village's history. The village also hosts a number of festivals and events throughout the year, including the Deferiet Days Festival, which is held in August.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there were 545 people, 212 households, and 145 families residing in the village. The population density was 890.2 people per square mile (344.3/km2). There were 229 housing units at an average density of 372.2 per square mile (143.7/km2). The racial makeup of the village was 97.45% White, 0.37% African American, 0.37% Native American, 0.37% Asian, 0.37% from other races, and 1.09% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.37% of the population.
