History

The area that is now Coxsackie was originally inhabited by the Mohican Indians. The first European settlers arrived in the area in the late 17th century. The village was founded in 1749 and was originally known as Coxsackie Landing. The name is derived from the Mohican word for “place of owls”.
The village was an important port on the Hudson River in the 18th and 19th centuries. It was a major stop on the Albany-New York City stagecoach route and was the site of the first steamboat to travel the Hudson River.

There were 845 households, out of which 28.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 44.2% were married couples living together, 13.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 36.2% were non-families. 30.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 12.7% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.45 and the average family size was 3.04.
In the village, the population was spread out, with 24.2% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 27.2% from 25 to 44, 24.2% from 45 to 64, and 16.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females, there were 91.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 87.2 males.
