Copiague Summary
Copiague is a hamlet located in the Town of Babylon in Suffolk County, New York. It is situated on the South Shore of Long Island, approximately 50 miles east of New York City. The hamlet is bordered by Amityville to the west, Lindenhurst to the east, and the Great South Bay to the south. As of the 2010 census, the population of Copiague was 22,993.
History
The area now known as Copiague was originally inhabited by the Secatogue Indians, a branch of the Algonquin tribe. The name Copiague is derived from the Secatogue word for “sheltered harbor” or “sheltered place.” The first European settlers arrived in the area in the 1650s, and the hamlet was officially established in 1798.
In the late 19th century, Copiague began to develop as a resort community, with many wealthy New Yorkers building summer homes along the Great South Bay. The hamlet was incorporated as a village in 1910, but was dissolved in 1920 due to financial difficulties.
Geography
Copiague is located at 40°39'25" North, 73°23'25" West (40.656944, -73.3903). According to the United States Census Bureau, the hamlet has a total area of 4.2 square miles, of which 3.9 square miles is land and 0.3 square miles is water.
Economy
The economy of Copiague is largely based on retail and services. The hamlet is home to several shopping centers, including the Copiague Commons Shopping Center, the Copiague Plaza Shopping Center, and the Copiague Shopping Center. There are also several restaurants, banks, and other businesses located in the area.

As of the 2010 census, there were 22,993 people, 7,845 households, and 5,845 families residing in Copiague. The population density was 5,919.3 people per square mile. The racial makeup of the hamlet was 64.3% White, 17.2% African American, 0.3% Native American, 5.2% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 9.7% from other races, and 3.2% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 22.3% of the population.
