Cobleskill Summary
Cobleskill is a town located in Schoharie County, New York, United States. The population was 5,907 at the 2010 census. The town is located in the southwest part of the county and is south of the city of Schenectady.
History
The area that is now Cobleskill was first settled in 1714 by Dutch and German immigrants. The town was originally part of the Schoharie Patent, which was granted to the Schoharie Indians in 1712. The town was first known as Cobleskill, after the Dutch word for "cobblestone". The town was officially established in 1788.
In the early 19th century, Cobleskill was a major center for the production of woolen goods. The town was also home to several tanneries and a number of gristmills. In 1845, the Cobleskill Academy was established, which later became the State University of New York at Cobleskill.
Geography
Cobleskill is located in the southwest corner of Schoharie County, bordered by the towns of Sharon to the north, Richmondville to the east, and Middleburgh to the south. The town is located approximately 40 miles southwest of Albany, the state capital.
The terrain of Cobleskill is mostly rolling hills, with some flat areas in the valleys. The highest point in the town is Cobleskill Mountain, which rises to an elevation of 1,890 feet. The town is drained by the Cobleskill Creek, which flows through the center of the town.

The economy of Cobleskill is largely based on agriculture and manufacturing. The town is home to several dairy farms, as well as a number of vegetable farms. The town is also home to several manufacturing companies, including a paper mill, a plastics factory, and a furniture factory.
