History

Chaumont was first settled in 1802 by a group of French-Canadian immigrants. The town was named after the French city of Chaumont-sur-Loire. The town was officially established in 1808.
In the early 19th century, Chaumont was a major center for the lumber industry. The town was also home to several sawmills, gristmills, and a tannery.

Geography

Chaumont is located in the northern part of Jefferson County, New York. It is bordered by the towns of Lyme, Clayton, and Henderson. The town is situated on the eastern shore of Lake Ontario.
The town has a total area of 33.2 square miles, of which 32.9 square miles is land and 0.3 square miles is water.

Economy

The economy of Chaumont is largely based on tourism and agriculture. The town is home to several wineries, including the Thousand Islands Winery and the Chaumont Winery.
