Castorland Summary

Castorland is a small town located in Lewis County, New York, United States. The population was 1,093 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Watertown-Fort Drum Metropolitan Statistical Area.

History

The town of Castorland was established in 1802 from part of the town of Leyden. The town was named after Castorland, a settlement in Poland founded by French Huguenots in 1793. The first settlers arrived in the area in 1802 and the town was officially established in 1803.
The town was originally a farming community, but in the late 19th century, it became a center for the lumber industry. The town was home to several sawmills and a gristmill. The lumber industry declined in the early 20th century and the town shifted to a more agricultural economy.

Geography

Castorland is located in the northwest corner of Lewis County, bordered by Jefferson County to the north, St. Lawrence County to the east, and Hermon to the south. The Black River forms the western border of the town.
According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 36.2 square miles, of which 35.9 square miles is land and 0.3 square miles, or 0.86%, is water.

Economy

The economy of Castorland is largely based on agriculture. The town is home to several dairy farms, as well as some beef and sheep farms. The town also has a few small businesses, including a general store, a gas station, and a few restaurants.

Demographics

As of the census of 2010, there were 1,093 people, 441 households, and 305 families residing in the town. The population density was 30.4 people per square mile. There were 486 housing units at an average density of 13.5 per square mile. The racial makeup of the town was 97.2% White, 0.7% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.2% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 0.2% from other races, and 1.6% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.2% of the population.
There were 441 households, out of which 28.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 54.2% were married couples living together, 8.6% had a female householder with no husband present, and 32.2% were non-families. 27.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 12.7% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.48 and the average family size was 3.02.
In the town, the population was spread out, with 24.2% under the age of 18, 6.7% from 18 to 24, 25.2% from 25 to 44, 28.2% from 45 to 64, and 15.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 40 years. For every 100 females, there were 97.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 95.2 males.
