Tioga County Summary
Tioga County is located in the south-central region of New York State, and is part of the Southern Tier region. It is bordered by Broome County to the east, Chemung County to the south, and Steuben County to the west. The county seat is Owego, and the largest city is Binghamton. The county has a total area of 545 square miles, and a population of 51,125 as of the 2010 census.
History
Tioga County was formed in 1806 from parts of Chemung and Steuben counties. It was named after the Tioga River, which flows through the county. The first settlers in the area were the Iroquois, who were followed by the Susquehannock and then the Seneca. The first European settlers arrived in the late 1700s, and the county was officially established in 1806.
The county was an important part of the Underground Railroad, with many of the county's residents helping to hide and transport escaped slaves. During the Civil War, the county was home to several regiments of the Union Army.

Tioga County is located in the south-central region of New York State, and is part of the Southern Tier region.
