Lewis County Summary

Lewis County is a county located in the U.S. state of New York. As of the 2010 census, the population was 27,087, making it the least populous county in the state. The county seat is Lowville. The county is named after Morgan Lewis, the Governor of New York when the county was established.

History

The area that is now Lewis County was part of the Central New York Military Tract, which was used to pay soldiers of the American Revolution. The first settlers arrived around 1793. The county was formed in 1805 from parts of Oneida and Herkimer counties. It was named after Morgan Lewis, the Governor of New York at the time.
The county was largely rural until the mid-20th century, when the population began to decline due to out-migration to larger cities. The decline has continued, and the county is now one of the least populous in the state.

Geography

Lewis County is located in the northern part of New York State, in the Adirondack Mountains region. It is bordered by Jefferson County to the north, St. Lawrence County to the east, Herkimer County to the south, and Oneida County to the west.
The county has a total area of 1,290 square miles, of which 1,280 square miles is land and 10 square miles (1.0%) is water. The highest point in the county is Mount Arab, at 3,890 feet.
The Black River, a tributary of the Mohawk River, flows through the county. Other major waterways include the Beaver River, the Moose River, and the Oswegatchie River.

Economy

The economy of Lewis County is largely based on agriculture and tourism. The county is home to several dairy farms, as well as a number of apple orchards. The county is also home to several state parks, including Beaver River State Forest, Black River Bay State Forest, and Stillwater State Forest.
The county is also home to a number of manufacturing companies, including a paper mill in Lowville and a cheese factory in Croghan.

Demographics

As of the 2010 census, there were 27,087 people, 10,845 households, and 7,541 families living in the county. The population density was 21.1 people per square mile. The racial makeup of the county was 97.2% White, 0.7% Black or African American, 0.3% Native American, 0.3% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 0.3% from other races, and 1.2% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.3% of the population.
The median income for a household in the county was $41,945, and the median income for a family was $50,945. The per capita income for the county was $20,845. About 10.2% of families and 13.7% of the population were below the poverty line, including 17.2% of those under age 18 and 8.7% of those age 65 or over.
