Jefferson County is located in the northern part of the state of New York, and is bordered by Lake Ontario to the north, St. Lawrence County to the east, Lewis County to the west, and Oswego County to the south. The county seat is located in the city of Watertown. The county has a total area of 1,814 square miles, and a population of 116,229 as of the 2010 census.

History

Jefferson County was established in 1805, and was named after Thomas Jefferson, the third President of the United States. The county was formed from parts of Oneida and Onondaga counties. The first settlers in the area were mostly of English and Scottish descent, and the county was largely agricultural in nature.
In the early 19th century, the county was a major center for the production of iron ore, and the county was home to several iron furnaces. The county was also a major center for the production of lumber, and the county was home to several sawmills.
In the late 19th century, the county was a major center for the production of dairy products, and the county was home to several cheese factories. The county was also a major center for the production of apples, and the county was home to several apple orchards.

Geography

Jefferson County is located in the northern part of the state of New York, and is bordered by Lake Ontario to the north, St. Lawrence County to the east, Lewis County to the west, and Oswego County to the south. The county is home to several large agricultural operations, including dairy farms, apple orchards, and vegetable farms.
