Antwerp Summary

Antwerp is a small town located in Jefferson County, New York, United States. The town is situated on the eastern shore of Lake Ontario, and is part of the Watertown-Fort Drum metropolitan area. As of the 2010 census, the town had a total population of 1,845.

History

The area that is now Antwerp was first settled in 1799 by a group of settlers from Massachusetts. The town was originally known as "Hogansburg," after the first settler, John Hogan. The town was later renamed "Antwerp" after the city of Antwerp in Belgium. The town was officially established in 1802.

Geography

Antwerp is located in the eastern part of Jefferson County, on the eastern shore of Lake Ontario. The town is bordered by the towns of Henderson to the north, Lyme to the east, and Clayton to the south. The Black River forms the western boundary of the town.
The town has a total area of 33.2 square miles, of which 32.9 square miles is land and 0.3 square miles is water. The highest point in the town is an unnamed hill in the northwest corner of the town, with an elevation of 890 feet above sea level.

Economy

The economy of Antwerp is largely based on agriculture and tourism. The town is home to several farms, which produce a variety of crops, including corn, soybeans, hay, and wheat. The town is also home to several wineries, which produce a variety of wines.
