West Bay Shore Summary
Bay Shore is a hamlet and census-designated place (CDP) located in the Town of Islip in Suffolk County, New York, United States. It is situated on the South Shore of Long Island, adjoining the Great South Bay. The population was 28,337 at the 2010 census.
History
The area now known as Bay Shore was originally inhabited by the Secatogue tribe of the Algonquin nation. The Secatogues were a peaceful tribe that lived off the land and water. They were eventually displaced by European settlers in the 17th century.
The first European settlers in the area were Dutch and English farmers who arrived in the early 1600s. The area was known as West Bay Shore until the late 1800s when it was changed to Bay Shore.
The area was a popular summer destination for wealthy New Yorkers in the late 19th century. The area was home to several grand hotels, including the Hotel Bay Shore, which was built in 1872. The hotel was destroyed by fire in 1892.
In the early 20th century, Bay Shore became a popular destination for immigrants from Europe. Many of these immigrants were Italian and Irish. The area was also home to a large African American population.
Geography
Bay Shore is located at 40°44'17" North, 73°14'45" West (40.738, -73.246). According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 8.2 square miles (21.2 km2), of which, 7.9 square miles (20.5 km2) of it is land and 0.3 square miles (0.7 km2) of it (3.45%) is water.
Economy
Bay Shore is a major commercial center on Long Island. The area is home to several large shopping centers, including the Westfield South Shore Mall, which is the largest mall on Long Island. The area is also home to several large employers, including the Northwell Health Southside Hospital, the Bay Shore School District, and the Long Island Rail Road.
Demographics
As of the census of 2000, there were 28,337 people, 10,845 households, and 6,945 families residing in the CDP. The population density was 3,619.3 per square mile (1,398.7/km2). There were 11,093 housing units at an average density of 1,412.3/sq mi (545.3/km2). The racial makeup of the CDP was 79.2% White, 8.2% African American, 0.2% Native American, 4.2% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 5.2% from other races, and 2.9% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 13.2% of the population.
There were 10,845 households, out of which 32.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 46.2% were married couples living together, 13.3% had a female householder with no husband present, and 35.2% were non-families. 28.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 10.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.60 and the average family size was 3.22.
In the CDP, the population was spread out, with 24.2% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 32.2% from 25 to 44, 21.7% from 45 to 64, and 13.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females, there were 93.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 89.7 males.
The median income for a household in the CDP was $50,945, and the median income for a family was $59,945. Males had a median income of $40,945 versus $31,945 for females. The per capita income for the CDP was $23,945. About 5.2% of families and 7.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 8.2% of those under age 18 and 6.2% of those age 65 or over.
