History

The area that is now Spackenkill was originally inhabited by the Wappinger Indians. The first European settlers arrived in the area in the late 17th century. The hamlet was originally known as “Spackenkill”, a Dutch word meaning “place of the wild geese”. The hamlet was officially established in 1788 and was part of the town of Poughkeepsie.
In the 19th century, the hamlet was a popular summer resort for wealthy New Yorkers. The hamlet was home to several large estates, including the Spackenkill House, which was built in 1820 and is now listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Geography
