South Valley Stream Summary

Valley Stream is a village located in Nassau County, New York, United States. It is situated in the southwestern part of the county, within the Town of Hempstead. The population was 37,511 at the 2010 census.

History

Valley Stream was originally inhabited by the Rockaway Indians, a branch of the Lenape tribe. The first European settlers arrived in the area in 1640, and the village was officially founded in 1837. The village was named after the stream that ran through the area, which was known as “Valley Stream” due to its location in a valley.
In the late 19th century, the village was a popular summer resort for wealthy New Yorkers. The village was incorporated in 1925, and the population began to grow rapidly. By the 1950s, the village had become a major shopping destination, with several large department stores and shopping centers.

Hispanic or Latino of any race were 16.7% of the population.
There were 12,845 households, out of which 33.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 54.2% were married couples living together, 12.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 28.2% were non-families. 22.7% of all households were made up of individuals, and 9.3% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.90 and the average family size was 3.41.
In the village, the population was spread out, with 24.2% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 30.2% from 25 to 44, 22.7% from 45 to 64, and 14.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 37 years. For every 100 females, there were 93.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 89.7 males.
