Sleepy Hollow Summary

Sleepy Hollow, NY is a village located in Westchester County, New York. It is situated on the eastern bank of the Hudson River, about 30 miles north of New York City. History

The area that is now Sleepy Hollow was originally inhabited by the Weckquaesgeek Native Americans. The first European settlers arrived in the area in the late 17th century, and the village was officially incorporated in 1755. The village was originally known as North Tarrytown, but was renamed Sleepy Hollow in 1996.
The village is best known for its association with the short story “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow” by Washington Irving, which was published in 1820. The story is set in the village and features the Headless Horseman, a ghostly figure who is said to haunt the area.

Geography

Sleepy Hollow is located at 41°6′N 73°51′W (41.097, -73.851). According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 2.2 square miles (5.7 km2), all of it land.
The village is situated on the eastern bank of the Hudson River, and is bordered by the towns of Ossining and Tarrytown. The village is part of the town of Mount Pleasant, and is located about 30 miles north of New York City.

Sleepy Hollow’s economy is largely based on tourism, as the village is a popular destination for visitors interested in its history and association with the “Legend of Sleepy Hollow”. The village is also home to several corporate headquarters, including PepsiCo, IBM, and MasterCard.

Demographics

As of the 2010 census, there were 9,870 people, 3,717 households, and 2,541 families residing in the village. The population density was 4,521.3 people per square mile (1,749.2/km2). There were 3,945 housing units at an average density of 1,817.2 per square mile (701.2/km2). The racial makeup of the village was 79.2% White, 8.2% African American, 0.2% Native American, 5.7% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 4.3% from other races, and 2.3% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 13.2% of the population.
There were 3,717 households, out of which 33.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 54.2% were married couples living together, 11.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 30.2% were non-families. 24.3% of all households were made up of individuals, and 9.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.64 and the average family size was 3.17.
In the village, the population was spread out, with 24.7% under the age of 18, 6.2% from 18 to 24, 30.2% from 25 to 44, 25.2% from 45 to 64, and 13.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females, there were 91.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 87.3 males.
The median income for a household in the village was $76,945, and the median income for a family was $90,945. Males had a median income of $60,945 versus $45,945 for females. The per capita income for the village was $35,945. About 4.2% of families and 6.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 8.2% of those under age 18 and 4.2% of those age 65 or over.
