Saddle Rock Summary

Saddle Rock is a hamlet located in the Town of North Hempstead in Nassau County, New York. It is situated on the north shore of Long Island, approximately 25 miles east of Manhattan. The hamlet is bordered by the villages of Great Neck and Port Washington, and is part of the Great Neck Peninsula.

History

The area now known as Saddle Rock was originally inhabited by the Matinecock Native American tribe. The first European settlers arrived in the area in the late 1600s, and the hamlet was officially established in 1790. The hamlet was named after a large rock formation that resembled a saddle, which was located near the intersection of what is now Northern Boulevard and Saddle Rock Road.
The hamlet was primarily a farming community until the late 19th century, when it began to develop into a residential area. The first post office was established in 1887, and the first school was built in 1895. The hamlet continued to grow throughout the 20th century, and by the 2000s, it had become a popular residential area for commuters to New York City.

Geography

Saddle Rock is located on the north shore of Long Island, approximately 25 miles east of Manhattan. It is bordered by the villages of Great Neck and Port Washington, and is part of the Great Neck Peninsula. The hamlet is situated on a hilly terrain, with elevations ranging from sea level to approximately 200 feet.
