Ossining Summary
Ossining is a village located in Westchester County, New York, United States. It is situated on the eastern bank of the Hudson River, about 30 miles north of New York City. The village is in the Town of Ossining, which also includes the villages of Briarcliff Manor and Croton-on-Hudson. As of the 2010 census, the village had a population of 25,060.
History
The area that is now Ossining was originally inhabited by the Siwanoy Native American tribe. The first European settlers arrived in the area in 1685, when Frederick Philipse purchased the land from the Siwanoy. The area was known as Sing Sing until 1901, when it was changed to Ossining. The name is derived from the Siwanoy word “Asenining”, which means “stone upon stone”.
The village was incorporated in 1813 and was the site of the first prison in New York State, Sing Sing Prison, which opened in 1826. The prison was the site of the execution of Julius and Ethel Rosenberg in 1953.
Geography
Ossining is located at 41°10′N 73°53′W (41.17, -73.88). According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 5.2 square miles (13.4 km2), of which 4.9 square miles (12.7 km2) is land and 0.3 square miles (0.7 km2) is water.
The village is bordered to the north by the town of Mount Pleasant, to the east by the town of New Castle, to the south by the town of Cortlandt, and to the west by the Hudson River.
Economy
Ossining’s economy is largely based on the service industry, with many residents employed in retail, healthcare, and education. The village is also home to several large employers, including IBM, PepsiCo, and the Sing Sing Correctional Facility.
Demographics
As of the 2010 census, there were 25,060 people, 8,945 households, and 5,845 families residing in the village. The population density was 5,093.3 people per square mile (1,967.2/km2). There were 9,541 housing units at an average density of 1,945.2 per square mile (750.2/km2). The racial makeup of the village was 57.2% White, 28.3% African American, 0.2% Native American, 5.2% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 5.3% from other races, and 3.7% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 18.3% of the population.
