History

Hempstead was first settled in 1644 by English settlers from Hempstead, England. The village was originally part of the Town of Hempstead, which was established in 1644. The village was incorporated in 1853.

Geography

Hempstead is located at 40°42'45" North, 73°41'45" West (40.712, -73.695). According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 4.2 square miles (10.8 km2), all of it land.

The racial makeup of the village was 44.3% White, 28.3% African American, 0.3% Native American, 11.3% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 13.2% from other races, and 2.5% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 28.3% of the population.
There were 17,845 households, out of which 33.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 44.2% were married couples living together, 16.3% had a female householder with no husband present, and 33.2% were non-families. 25.7% of all households were made up of individuals, and 8.3% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.99 and the average family size was 3.60.
