Hempstead, New York is a village located in Nassau County, New York, United States. The village is part of the Town of Hempstead, which is the most populous town in the state of New York. The village is located in the southwestern part of the town, bordering Queens County, New York. As of the 2010 census, the village had a population of 53,891.
History
Hempstead was first settled in 1644 by English settlers from Hempstead, England. The village was originally part of the Town of Hempstead, which was established in 1644. The village was incorporated in 1853.
Geography
Hempstead is located at 40°42'45" North, 73°41'45" West (40.712, -73.695). According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 4.2 square miles (10.8 km2), all of it land.
Economy
Hempstead is home to a variety of businesses, including retail stores, restaurants, and professional services. The village is also home to Hofstra University, which is a private university located in Hempstead.
Demographics
As of the 2010 census, there were 53,891 people, 17,845 households, and 11,945 families residing in the village. The population density was 12,845.3 people per square mile (4,945.3/km2). There were 18,845 housing units at an average density of 4,521.3 per square mile (1,749.2/km2). The racial makeup of the village was 44.3% White, 28.3% African American, 0.3% Native American, 11.3% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 13.2% from other races, and 2.5% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 28.3% of the population.
There were 17,845 households, out of which 33.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 44.2% were married couples living together, 16.3% had a female householder with no husband present, and 33.2% were non-families. 25.7% of all households were made up of individuals, and 8.3% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.99 and the average family size was 3.60.
In the village, the population was spread out, with 24.2% under the age of 18, 11.2% from 18 to 24, 30.2% from 25 to 44, 22.2% from 45 to 64, and 12.2% who were 65 years of age or older.
