Lakewood is a village located in Chautauqua County, New York, United States. The population was 2,719 at the 2010 census. The village is in the town of Busti and is part of the Jamestown-Dunkirk-Fredonia Micropolitan Statistical Area.

History

The area that is now Lakewood was first settled in 1811 by a group of settlers from Connecticut. The village was originally known as "Chautauqua Lake", but was later changed to "Lakewood" in 1868. The village was incorporated in 1875.

Geography

Lakewood is located at 42°7′17″N 79°20′17″W (42.121400, -79.338100). According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 1.2 square miles (3.1 km2), all of it land.

Economy

The economy of Lakewood is largely based on tourism. The village is home to several resorts and hotels, as well as a number of restaurants and shops. The village is also home to a number of manufacturing and industrial businesses.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there were 2,719 people, 1,093 households, and 717 families residing in the village. The population density was 2,269.2 people per square mile (876.3/km2). There were 1,179 housing units at an average density of 976.2 per square mile (377.2/km2). The racial makeup of the village was 97.90% White, 0.81% African American, 0.07% Native American, 0.37% Asian, 0.07% Pacific Islander, 0.22% from other races, and 0.56% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.81% of the population.
There were 1,093 households, out of which 28.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.2% were married couples living together, 10.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 33.7% were non-families. 29.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 14.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.41 and the average family size was 2.97.
In the village, the population was spread out, with 24.2% under the age of 18, 6.2% from 18 to 24, 25.2% from 25 to 44, 24.2% from 45 to 64, and 20.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 41 years. For every 100 females, there were 87.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 83.2 males.
