History

The area that is now Jefferson Valley-Yorktown was originally inhabited by the Wappinger Native American tribe. The first European settlers arrived in the area in the late 17th century. The hamlet was originally known as Jeffersonville, named after Thomas Jefferson, who owned a large tract of land in the area. The hamlet was later renamed Jefferson Valley-Yorktown in the late 19th century.

Geography

Jefferson Valley-Yorktown is located in the southeastern corner of the town of Yorktown, near the border with Putnam County. The hamlet is situated on the east bank of the Croton River, which flows through the area. The hamlet is located about 40 miles north of New York City and is part of the New York metropolitan area.
The hamlet has a total area of 2.2 square miles, all of which is land. The terrain is mostly hilly and wooded, with some open fields. The highest point in the hamlet is the summit of Yorktown Hill, which has an elevation of 590 feet.

Jefferson Valley-Yorktown is primarily a residential community, with most of its residents commuting to nearby cities for work. The hamlet is home to several small businesses, including restaurants, retail stores, and professional services.
