Jamestown Summary

Jamesown, NY is a city located in Chautauqua County, New York, United States. It is situated on the eastern shore of Chautauqua Lake, and is the county seat of Chautauqua County. The population was 31,730 at the 2010 census, making it the largest city in the county.

History

The area that is now Jamestown was first settled in 1808 by James Prendergast, a Revolutionary War veteran. Prendergast established a trading post and ferry service on the Chadakoin River, which was later renamed the Chadakoin River. The city was officially incorporated in 1827, and was named after Prendergast's son, James.
In the late 19th century, Jamestown became a major industrial center, with several large factories producing furniture, textiles, and other goods. The city was also home to several large railroads, including the Erie Railroad and the Jamestown & Lake Erie Railroad.
In the early 20th century, Jamestown was a major center for the production of glass, and the city was home to several glass factories. The city was also home to several large steel mills, and was a major center for the production of steel products.
