Hillside Summary

Hillside is a small hamlet located in the town of North Hempstead in Nassau County, New York. It is situated on the north shore of Long Island, approximately 25 miles east of Manhattan. The hamlet is bordered by the villages of Great Neck and Manhasset, and the hamlet of Roslyn Heights. The population of Hillside was 2,845 at the 2010 census.

History

The area that is now Hillside was originally inhabited by the Matinecock Native American tribe. The first European settlers arrived in the area in the late 1600s, and the hamlet was officially established in 1790. The hamlet was originally known as “Hillsides”, and was later changed to “Hillside”.
The hamlet was primarily a farming community until the late 19th century, when it began to develop into a residential area. The first post office was established in 1891, and the first school was built in 1895. The hamlet continued to grow throughout the 20th century, and by the 1950s, it had become a popular suburban community.

Geography

Hillside is located at 40°48'17" North, 73°41'17" West (40.804722, -73.688056). The hamlet has a total area of 0.6 square miles, all of which is land.
The hamlet is located on the north shore of Long Island, approximately 25 miles east of Manhattan. It is bordered by the villages of Great Neck and Manhasset, and the hamlet of Roslyn Heights. The hamlet is situated on a hill, and is surrounded by wooded areas and wetlands.

Economy

The economy of Hillside is primarily based on retail and services. The hamlet is home to a variety of small businesses, including restaurants, shops, and professional services. The hamlet is also home to a number of corporate offices, including a branch of the New York Life Insurance Company.

Demographics

As of the 2010 census, there were 2,845 people, 1,093 households, and 790 families residing in Hillside. The population density was 4,717.3 people per square mile. The racial makeup of the hamlet was 79.2% White, 8.2% African American, 0.2% Native American, 6.3% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 3.2% from other races, and 2.9% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 8.7% of the population.
The median age in Hillside was 43.2 years. 22.2% of residents were under the age of 18; 6.2% were between the ages of 18 and 24; 22.7% were from 25 to 44; 33.2% were from 45 to 64; and 15.7% were 65 years of age or older. The gender makeup of the hamlet was 48.2% male and 51.8% female.
The median income for a household in Hillside was $90,938, and the median income for a family was $106,938. The per capita income for the hamlet was $45,938. About 3.2% of families and 4.7% of the population were below the poverty line, including 5.2% of those under age 18 and 4.2% of those age 65 or over.
