Highland Falls, NY is a village located in Orange County, New York, United States. It is part of the Poughkeepsie–Newburgh–Middletown, NY Metropolitan Statistical Area. The population was 3,900 at the 2010 census.

History

Highland Falls was first settled in 1725 by Dutch and German immigrants. The village was originally known as Buttermilk Falls, due to the abundance of buttermilk in the area. The name was changed to Highland Falls in 1845.
Highland Falls was the site of the United States Military Academy at West Point from 1802 to 1817. During this time, the village was known as “The Point”. The village was incorporated in 1877.

Geography

Highland Falls is located at 41°21′25″N 73°57′45″W (41.356944, -73.962500). According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 1.2 square miles (3.1 km2), all of it land.

Economy

Highland Falls is home to several businesses, including a grocery store, a pharmacy, a hardware store, a bank, and several restaurants. The village is also home to the United States Military Academy at West Point, which is a major employer in the area.

Demographics

As of the census of 2010, there were 3,900 people, 1,541 households, and 990 families residing in the village. The population density was 3,250.0 people per square mile (1,250.0/km2). There were 1,717 housing units at an average density of 1,430.8 per square mile (552.3/km2). The racial makeup of the village was 87.2% White, 8.2% African American, 0.3% Native American, 1.2% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 1.2% from other races, and 1.9% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 5.2% of the population.
There were 1,541 households, out of which 28.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 46.2% were married couples living together, 12.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 36.2% were non-families. 30.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 11.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.45 and the average family size was 3.05.
In the village, the population was spread out, with 22.2% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 28.2% from 25 to 44, 25.2% from 45 to 64, and 16.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 39 years. For every 100 females, there were 91.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 88.2 males.
The median income for a household in the village was $50,000, and the median income for a family was $60,000. Males had a median income of $41,000 versus $30,000 for females. The per capita income for the village was $25,000. About 5.2% of families and 7.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 8.2% of those under age 18 and 5.2% of those age 65 or over.
