Frewsburg Summary

Frewsburg is a small town located in Chautauqua County, New York, United States. The population was 1,717 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Jamestown-Dunkirk-Fredonia, NY Metropolitan Statistical Area.

History

Frewsburg was first settled in 1806 by John Frew, a Revolutionary War veteran from Pennsylvania. The town was named after him and was officially established in 1812. The first post office was established in 1820.
The town was originally part of the Town of Carroll, which was established in 1821. In 1825, the Town of Frewsburg was formed from the western part of Carroll.

Geography

Frewsburg is located in the western part of Chautauqua County, in the southwestern part of the state. It is bordered by the towns of Carroll to the east, Ellington to the south, and Poland to the west. The town is located on the eastern edge of the Allegheny Plateau.
The town is located at the intersection of two major highways, New York State Route 394 and New York State Route 430. The town is also served by the Frewsburg-Conewango Valley Railroad, which runs through the town.
The town is home to several small lakes, including Frewsburg Lake, which is located in the center of the town.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there were 1,717 people, 690 households, and 486 families residing in the town. The population density was 57.2 people per square mile (22.1/km2). There were 745 housing units at an average density of 24.6 per square mile (9.5/km2). The racial makeup of the town was 98.45% White, 0.35% African American, 0.12% Native American, 0.12% Asian, 0.12% from other races, and 0.82% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.35% of the population.
There were 690 households, out of which 33.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 56.5% were married couples living together, 9.4% had a female householder with no husband present, and 29.3% were non-families. 24.3% of all households were made up of individuals, and 11.3% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.48 and the average family size was 2.94.
In the town, the population was spread out, with 25.2% under the age of 18, 6.7% from 18 to 24, 28.2% from 25 to 44, 24.2% from 45 to 64, and 15.7% who were 65 years of age or older.
