Fredonia Summary
Fredonia, NY is a village located in Chautauqua County, New York, United States. The population was 11,230 at the 2010 census. It is the home of the State University of New York at Fredonia.
History
The area that is now Fredonia was first settled in 1804 by pioneers from Connecticut. The village was incorporated in 1829 and named after the fictional country of Fredonia in the play The Revolution of Switzerland by Robert Watt.
The village was the site of the Fredonia Rebellion of 1826, an attempt by local farmers to secede from the United States and form their own independent republic. The rebellion was unsuccessful and the farmers were forced to return to the United States.
Geography
Fredonia is located in western Chautauqua County at 42°27′N 79°22′W (42.45, -79.37). It is bordered to the north by the town of Pomfret, to the east by the town of Dunkirk, to the south by the town of Sheridan, and to the west by the town of Stockton.
According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 4.2 square miles (10.8 km2), all of it land.
Economy
The economy of Fredonia is largely based on education, manufacturing, and tourism. The State University of New York at Fredonia is the largest employer in the village, with over 1,000 faculty and staff. The university also attracts many students and visitors to the village each year.
Manufacturing is also an important part of the local economy. The village is home to several factories, including a paper mill, a plastics plant, and a metal fabrication plant.

As of the census of 2010, there were 11,230 people, 4,541 households, and 2,541 families residing in the village. The population density was 2,664.7 people per square mile (1,030.2/km2). There were 4,945 housing units at an average density of 1,179.2 per square mile (455.7/km2). The racial makeup of the village was 94.2% White, 1.7% African American, 0.3% Native American, 1.2% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 0.7% from other races, and 1.9% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 3.2% of the population.
There were 4,541 households, out of which 24.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 41.2% were married couples living together, 11.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 43.2% were non-families. 35.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 14.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.27 and the average family size was 2.94.
In the village, the population was spread out, with 19.7% under the age of 18, 24.2% from 18 to 24, 22.2% from 25 to 44, 20.2% from 45 to 64, and 13.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 33 years. For every 100 females, there were 87.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 83.7 males.
The median income for a household in the village was $35,945, and the median income for a family was $45,945. Males had a median income of $31,945 versus $25,945 for females. The per capita income for the village was $17,945. About 8.2% of families and 13.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 15.2% of those under age 18 and 8.2% of those age 65 or over.
