Centre Island Summary

Centre Island, NY is a small village located in the Town of Oyster Bay in Nassau County, New York. It is situated on the north shore of Long Island, approximately 25 miles east of Manhattan. The village is home to approximately 1,000 people and covers an area of 0.6 square miles.

History

Centre Island was originally inhabited by the Matinecock Native American tribe. The first European settlers arrived in the area in the 1650s and the village was officially established in 1667. The village was originally known as “Mespat”, which is derived from the Matinecock word for “island”. The village was renamed “Centre Island” in 1845.
In the late 19th century, Centre Island became a popular summer destination for wealthy New Yorkers. The village was home to several large estates, including the estate of William K. Vanderbilt, which was built in 1882. The estate was later purchased by the City of New York in 1938 and is now part of the Vanderbilt Museum.

Geography

Centre Island is located on the north shore of Long Island, approximately 25 miles east of Manhattan. The village is situated on a peninsula that is surrounded by Oyster Bay and Cold Spring Harbor. The village is bordered by the villages of Oyster Bay and Mill Neck to the west, and the hamlet of Bayville to the east.
