Cayuga Heights Summary

Cayuga Heights is a village located in Tompkins County, New York, United States. It is a suburb of the city of Ithaca, located on the west side of Cayuga Lake. The population was 2,845 at the 2010 census.

History

The area that is now Cayuga Heights was originally inhabited by the Cayuga Nation, a member of the Iroquois Confederacy. The first European settlers arrived in the area in the late 1700s. The village was incorporated in 1927.

Geography

Cayuga Heights is located at 42°27'25" North, 76°30'45" West (42.456944, -76.5125). According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 1.2 square miles (3.1 km2), all of it land.

Economy

Cayuga Heights is home to several businesses, including a grocery store, a hardware store, a pharmacy, and several restaurants. The village is also home to Cornell University, which is one of the largest employers in the area.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there were 2,845 people, 1,093 households, and 745 families residing in the village. The population density was 2,364.2 people per square mile (912.2/km2). There were 1,139 housing units at an average density of 945.2 per square mile (364.7/km2). The racial makeup of the village was 92.2% White, 2.2% African American, 0.2% Native American, 3.2% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 0.7% from other races, and 1.4% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 2.3% of the population.
There were 1,093 households, out of which 28.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 58.2% were married couples living together, 6.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 32.7% were non-families. 25.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 10.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.45 and the average family size was 2.94.
In the village, the population was spread out, with 20.2% under the age of 18, 11.2% from 18 to 24, 24.2% from 25 to 44, 27.2% from 45 to 64, and 17.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 41 years. For every 100 females, there were 87.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 84.2 males.
The median income for a household in the village was $54,917, and the median income for a family was $68,750. Males had a median income of $45,938 versus $31,250 for females. The per capita income for the village was $27,945. About 2.7% of families and 5.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 4.2% of those under age 18 and 4.2% of those age 65 or over.
