Brocton Summary
Brocton, NY is a small village located in Chautauqua County, New York. It is situated on the eastern shore of Lake Erie, approximately 20 miles south of Buffalo. The village has a population of 1,664 as of the 2010 census.
History
The area that is now Brocton was first settled in 1811 by a group of settlers from Connecticut. The village was originally known as "West Portland" and was later renamed "Brocton" in 1851 after a local landowner, William Brocton. The village was incorporated in 1867.
In the late 19th century, Brocton was a major center for the production of wooden barrels and staves. The village was also home to several brickyards and a large tannery.
Geography
Brocton is located at 42°25'N 79°25'W (42.4167, -79.4167). According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 1.2 square miles (3.1 km2), all of it land.
Economy
The economy of Brocton is largely based on agriculture and tourism. The village is home to several wineries, including the award-winning 21 Brix Winery. The village also has several small businesses, including a grocery store, a hardware store, and a few restaurants.
Demographics
As of the 2010 census, there were 1,664 people, 690 households, and 441 families residing in the village. The population density was 1,384.3 people per square mile (534.3/km2). There were 745 housing units at an average density of 621.7 per square mile (239.7/km2). The racial makeup of the village was 97.2% White, 0.7% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.2% Asian, 0.2% from other races, and 1.7% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.2% of the population.
There were 690 households, out of which 28.3% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 48.3% were married couples living together, 11.3% had a female householder with no husband present, and 36.0% were non-families. 30.3% of all households were made up of individuals, and 14.1% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.40 and the average family size was 2.97.
In the village, the population was spread out, with 24.2% under the age of 18, 6.2% from 18 to 24, 25.7% from 25 to 44, 25.2% from 45 to 64, and 18.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 40 years. For every 100 females, there were 91.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 87.2 males.
The median income for a household in the village was $35,938, and the median income for a family was $45,000. Males had a median income of $31,250 versus $22,500 for females. The per capita income for the village was $17,945. About 8.2% of families and 11.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 15.2% of those under age 18 and 8.2% of those age 65 or over.
