Belle Terre is a small hamlet located in the Town of Brookhaven in Suffolk County, New York. It is situated on the north shore of Long Island, approximately 60 miles east of New York City. History

Belle Terre was first settled in the late 1600s by English settlers. The hamlet was originally known as “Old Field” and was part of the Town of Brookhaven. In the early 1800s, the hamlet was renamed “Belle Terre”, which is French for “beautiful land”. The hamlet was primarily a farming community until the 1950s, when it began to experience rapid growth due to its proximity to New York City.

Geography

Belle Terre is located on the north shore of Long Island, approximately 60 miles east of New York City. The hamlet is bordered by the hamlets of Port Jefferson Station to the west, Mount Sinai to the east, and Miller Place to the south. Belle Terre is situated on a peninsula, with the Long Island Sound to the north and the Nissequogue River to the south. The hamlet is mostly flat, with some rolling hills in the western part of the hamlet.
