History
Batavia was first settled in 1789 by pioneers from New England. The town was named after the city of Batavia in the Netherlands. The town was incorporated in 1802 and became the county seat of Genesee County in 1803.
In the early 19th century, Batavia was a major stop on the Underground Railroad, with many fugitive slaves passing through the city on their way to freedom in Canada.
In 1827, the Erie Canal was completed, connecting the Great Lakes to the Hudson River and providing a major transportation route for goods and people. This made Batavia a major hub for commerce and transportation.
In the late 19th century, Batavia was a major center for the production of furniture and other wood products. The city was also home to several major manufacturing companies, including the Batavia Iron Works and the Batavia Machine Works.

Batavia is located at 42°59′N 78°18′W (42.983, -78.301). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 4.2 square miles (10.8 km2), all of it land.
The city is located on the eastern edge of the Genesee Valley, a large area of flat land that stretches from the Finger Lakes region to the west to the Genesee River to the east. The city is located on the banks of the Tonawanda Creek, a tributary of the Genesee River.

The racial makeup of the city was 94.2% White, 1.7% African American, 0.3% Native American, 0.7% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 1.3% from other races, and 1.7% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 4.2% of the population.
There were 6,541 households, out of which 28.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 43.2% were married couples living together, 13.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 38.2% were non-families. 32.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 14.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.33 and the average family size was 2.94.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 23.7% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 27.2% from 25 to 44, 22.7% from 45 to 64, and 18.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females, there were 88.3 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 84.2 males.
