Asharoken Summary
Asharoken is a village located in Suffolk County, New York, United States. It is situated on the north shore of Long Island, approximately 50 miles east of New York City. The village is part of the Town of Huntington and is bordered by the Long Island Sound to the north, the Village of Northport to the east, and the Town of Huntington to the south and west. As of the 2010 census, the population of Asharoken was 1,425.
History
The area that is now Asharoken was originally inhabited by the Matinecock Native American tribe. The Matinecock were a part of the Algonquin Nation and were known for their fishing and hunting skills. The Matinecock were eventually displaced by European settlers in the 17th century.
The first European settlers in the area were the Asharoken family, who arrived in the late 1600s. The family established a large farm and built a house on the property. The house still stands today and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
In the late 1800s, the area began to develop as a summer resort destination. The village was incorporated in 1925 and was named after the Asharoken family.
Geography
Asharoken is located at 40°54'N 73°25'W (40.9000, -73.4167). According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 1.2 square miles, all of which is land.
The village is located on the north shore of Long Island, approximately 50 miles east of New York City. It is bordered by the Long Island Sound to the north, the Village of Northport to the east, and the Town of Huntington to the south and west.
Economy
The economy of Asharoken is largely based on tourism. The village is home to several popular beaches, including Asharoken Beach, which is a popular destination for swimming, fishing, and boating. The village also has several restaurants, shops, and other businesses that cater to tourists.
In addition to tourism, the village is also home to several small businesses, including a marina, a boatyard, and a yacht club.
Demographics
As of the 2010 census, there were 1,425 people, 590 households, and 431 families residing in the village. The population density was 1,179.2 people per square mile. The racial makeup of the village was 94.2% White, 1.7% African American, 0.2% Native American, 1.2% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 0.7% from other races, and 1.9% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 3.3% of the population.
