Tiffin Summary

Tiffin is a city located in Seneca County, Ohio, United States. It is the county seat of Seneca County and is located along the Sandusky River. The population was 17,963 at the 2010 census. It is the principal city of the Tiffin Micropolitan Statistical Area, which includes all of Seneca County.

History

Tiffin was founded in 1812 by Edward Tiffin, the first governor of Ohio. The city was named after him. Tiffin was originally a trading post and was later incorporated as a village in 1835. It was later incorporated as a city in 1854.
Tiffin was an important stop on the Underground Railroad, and was home to many abolitionists. The city was also a major center of the glass industry in the 19th century.

Geography

Tiffin is located at 41°7′25″N 83°10′51″W (41.123611, -83.180833). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 8.45 square miles (21.90 km2), of which 8.37 square miles (21.68 km2) is land and 0.08 square miles (0.22 km2) is water.

Economy

Tiffin is home to several major employers, including Whirlpool Corporation, Seneca Industrial and Economic Development Corporation, and Heidelberg University. The city is also home to several small businesses, including restaurants, retail stores, and professional services.

Demographics

As of the census of 2010, there were 17,963 people, 7,541 households, and 4,541 families residing in the city. The population density was 2,139.3 people per square mile (822.7/km2). There were 8,093 housing units at an average density of 966.3 per square mile (372.9/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 92.2% White, 4.2% African American, 0.3% Native American, 0.7% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 0.7% from other races, and 1.9% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 2.2% of the population.
There were 7,541 households, out of which 28.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 43.2% were married couples living together, 14.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 38.2% were non-families. 32.3% of all households were made up of individuals, and 13.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.33 and the average family size was 2.94.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 24.2% under the age of 18, 10.2% from 18 to 24, 25.7% from 25 to 44, 23.3% from 45 to 64, and 16.6% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females, there were 90.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 86.2 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $35,945, and the median income for a family was $45,945. Males had a median income of $35,945 versus $25,945 for females. The per capita income for the city was $19,945. About 8.2% of families and 11.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 15.2% of those under age 18 and 8.2% of those age 65 or over.
