Lima Summary
Lima, Ohio is a city located in Allen County, Ohio, United States. It is the county seat of Allen County and the principal city of the Lima, Ohio Metropolitan Statistical Area, which is included in the Lima-Van Wert-Wapakoneta, OH Combined Statistical Area. The population of Lima was 38,771 at the 2010 census, making it the most populous city in Northwest Ohio.
History
Lima was founded in 1831 by James Riley, a surveyor from Cincinnati. He named the city after the Peruvian capital of Lima. The city was incorporated in 1842 and became the county seat of Allen County in 1848.
In the late 19th century, Lima was a major railroad hub and a major industrial center. It was home to several large factories, including the Lima Locomotive Works, which produced steam locomotives for the railroads. The city also had a large number of foundries and machine shops.
In the early 20th century, Lima was a major center for the oil and natural gas industry. The city was home to several large oil refineries and natural gas processing plants.
Geography
Lima is located at 40°44′N 84°7′W (40.735, -84.117). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 16.2 square miles (41.8 km2), of which 16.1 square miles (41.6 km2) is land and 0.1 square miles (0.2 km2) is water.
Economy
Lima's economy is largely based on manufacturing and healthcare. The city is home to several large manufacturing companies, including Honda of America Manufacturing, Inc., which produces automobiles and engines, and the Lima Refinery, which produces gasoline and other petroleum products. The city is also home to several healthcare facilities, including Lima Memorial Health System, St. Rita's Medical Center, and Mercy Health-St. Rita's Medical Center.
Demographics
As of the 2010 census, there were 38,771 people, 15,845 households, and 9,945 families residing in the city. The population density was 2,406.2 people per square mile (927.7/km2). There were 17,845 housing units at an average density of 1,106.3 per square mile (425.7/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 79.2% White, 15.3% African American, 0.3% Native American, 0.7% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 1.7% from other races, and 2.9% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 4.2% of the population.
There were 15,845 households, out of which 30.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 41.2% were married couples living together, 16.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 37.2% were non-families. 32.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 12.7% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.41 and the average family size was 3.02.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 25.7% under the age of 18, 9.2% from 18 to 24, 27.2% from 25 to 44, 22.7% from 45 to 64, and 15.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females, there were 91.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 87.2 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $30,945, and the median income for a family was $38,845. Males had a median income of $31,945 versus $22,945 for females. The per capita income for the city was $17,845. About 14.2% of families and 17.7% of the population were below the poverty line, including 25.2% of those under age 18 and 9.7% of those age 65 or over.
