Green Summary

Green, Ohio is a city located in Summit County, Ohio, United States. It is a suburb of Akron and is part of the Akron Metropolitan Statistical Area. The population was 25,943 at the 2010 census.

History

Green was first settled in 1809 by John Green, a Revolutionary War veteran. The area was originally known as Greensburg, but the name was changed to Green in 1871. The city was incorporated in 1992.

Geography

Green is located at 41°3′45″N 81°33′45″W (41.0625, -81.5625). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 16.2 square miles (41.8 km2), of which 16.1 square miles (41.6 km2) is land and 0.1 square miles (0.2 km2) is water.

Economy

Green is home to several large employers, including the Akron-Canton Airport, the University of Akron, and the Akron General Medical Center. The city also has a number of small businesses, including restaurants, retail stores, and professional services.

Demographics

As of the census of 2010, there were 25,943 people, 10,717 households, and 7,072 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,611.2 people per square mile (621.7/km2). There were 11,541 housing units at an average density of 717.3 per square mile (277.3/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 90.2% White, 4.2% African American, 0.2% Native American, 2.3% Asian, 0.7% from other races, and 2.4% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 2.3% of the population.
There were 10,717 households, out of which 30.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 54.2% were married couples living together, 10.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 31.2% were non-families. 25.7% of all households were made up of individuals, and 9.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.43 and the average family size was 2.93.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 23.7% under the age of 18, 7.2% from 18 to 24, 28.2% from 25 to 44, 26.2% from 45 to 64, and 14.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 39 years. For every 100 females, there were 93.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 90.2 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $54,945, and the median income for a family was $64,945. Males had a median income of $45,945 versus $32,945 for females. The per capita income for the city was $25,945. About 3.2% of families and 4.7% of the population were below the poverty line, including 5.3% of those under age 18 and 4.2% of those age 65 or over.
