History
Girard was founded in 1803 by John Girard, a Revolutionary War veteran. The city was originally known as "Girard Township" and was incorporated as a village in 1867. The city was named after John Girard, who was a major landowner in the area.
Girard was a major industrial center in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The city was home to several steel mills, including the Girard Iron and Steel Company, which was founded in 1872. The city also had several other industries, including a glass factory, a brickyard, and a paper mill.

There were 4,072 households, out of which 28.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 44.2% were married couples living together, 15.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 35.7% were non-families. 30.3% of all households were made up of individuals, and 13.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.41 and the average family size was 2.98.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 24.2% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 27.2% from 25 to 44, 24.2% from 45 to 64, and 16.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females, there were 91.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 87.2 males.
