History
Dunkirk was founded in 1837 by a group of settlers from Pennsylvania. The village was named after the Battle of Dunkirk, which had taken place in France in 1793. The village was incorporated in 1845.
In the late 19th century, Dunkirk was a thriving agricultural community. The village was home to several mills, including a flour mill, a saw mill, and a grist mill. The village also had a blacksmith shop, a general store, and a post office.
