Congress Summary

Congress is a village in Athens County, Ohio, United States. The population was 545 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Athens, Ohio Micropolitan Statistical Area.

History

Congress was founded in 1817 by a group of settlers from Congress, New York. The village was named after the New York town. The first post office in Congress was established in 1818.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 0.3 square miles (0.8 km2), all land.

Economy

Congress is home to several small businesses, including a grocery store, a hardware store, a restaurant, and a gas station. The village also has a post office and a bank.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there were 545 people, 212 households, and 149 families residing in the village. The population density was 1,845.2 people per square mile (717.2/km2). There were 227 housing units at an average density of 767.2 per square mile (297.3/km2). The racial makeup of the village was 98.18% White, 0.37% African American, 0.18% Native American, 0.37% Asian, and 0.92% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.37% of the population.
There were 212 households, out of which 33.0% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 54.2% were married couples living together, 11.3% had a female householder with no husband present, and 30.2% were non-families. 25.0% of all households were made up of individuals, and 11.3% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.57 and the average family size was 3.09.
In the village, the population was spread out, with 27.2% under the age of 18, 8.3% from 18 to 24, 28.3% from 25 to 44, 22.2% from 45 to 64, and 14.0% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females, there were 94.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 88.2 males.
The median income for a household in the village was $31,250, and the median income for a family was $36,250. Males had a median income of $30,000 versus $20,000 for females. The per capita income for the village was $14,945.
