Bowling Green Summary

Bowling Green, Ohio is a city located in Wood County, Ohio, United States. It is the county seat of Wood County and is located approximately 25 miles south of Toledo, Ohio. The city has a population of 30,028 as of the 2010 census.

History

The area that is now Bowling Green was first settled in 1832 by pioneers from New England. The town was originally called Bowling Green because of the large number of bowling alleys in the area. The town was incorporated in 1855 and was named the county seat of Wood County in 1867.
In the late 19th century, Bowling Green was a major center for the production of glass and pottery. The city was home to the largest glass factory in the world, the Libbey Glass Company. The company was founded in 1888 and was the largest employer in the city until it closed in 1982.

Geography

Bowling Green is located at 41°22'N, 83°38'W (41.37, -83.63). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 11.2 square miles (29.0 km2), of which 11.1 square miles (28.7 km2) is land and 0.1 square miles (0.3 km2) is water.

Economy

Bowling Green is home to Bowling Green State University, which is the city’s largest employer. The university has an enrollment of over 20,000 students and employs over 4,000 faculty and staff. Other major employers in the city include Wood County Hospital, the Wood County Board of Education, and the City of Bowling Green.

Demographics

As of the 2010 census, there were 30,028 people, 11,845 households, and 6,845 families residing in the city. The population density was 2,711.3 people per square mile (1,047.2/km2). There were 12,845 housing units at an average density of 1,156.2 per square mile (447.2/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 90.2% White, 4.2% African American, 0.3% Native American, 2.2% Asian, 0.5% from other races, and 2.7% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 2.7% of the population.
There were 11,845 households, out of which 24.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 43.2% were married couples living together, 10.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 42.2% were non-families. 33.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 11.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.27 and the average family size was 2.93.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 19.7% under the age of 18, 24.2% from 18 to 24, 22.3% from 25 to 44, 20.2% from 45 to 64, and 13.6% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 28 years. For every 100 females, there were 87.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 83.3 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $37,837, and the median income for a family was $50,945. Males had a median income of $37,837 versus $27,837 for females. The per capita income for the city was $19,945. About 8.2% of families and 14.3% of the population were below the poverty line, including 14.3% of those under age 18 and 8.2% of those age 65 or over.
