Willowick Summary

Willowick is a city located in Lake County, Ohio, United States. The population was 14,171 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Cleveland–Elyria–Mentor Metropolitan Statistical Area.

History

Willowick was first settled in 1815 by a group of settlers from Connecticut. The town was originally known as Willoughby Township, and was later changed to Willowick in 1892. The name is derived from the Native American word for “willow”. The town was incorporated in 1921.

Geography

Willowick is located at 41°37′17″N 81°30′45″W (41.621400, -81.512550). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 4.45 square miles (11.54 km2), of which 4.43 square miles (11.48 km2) is land and 0.02 square miles (0.06 km2) is water.

Economy

Willowick’s economy is largely based on manufacturing and retail. The city is home to several manufacturing companies, including a steel mill, a plastics plant, and a paper mill. Retail businesses in the city include a variety of restaurants, grocery stores, and other retail outlets.

Demographics

As of the census of 2010, there were 14,171 people, 5,845 households, and 3,845 families residing in the city. The population density was 3,192.2 people per square mile (1,228.7/km2). There were 6,323 housing units at an average density of 1,422.3 per square mile (549.3/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 94.2% White, 1.7% African American, 0.2% Native American, 1.2% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 0.7% from other races, and 1.9% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 2.7% of the population.
There were 5,845 households, out of which 28.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 48.2% were married couples living together, 12.3% had a female householder with no husband present, and 34.7% were non-families. 29.7% of all households were made up of individuals, and 11.7% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.41 and the average family size was 2.99.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 23.2% under the age of 18, 7.7% from 18 to 24, 28.2% from 25 to 44, 24.3% from 45 to 64, and 16.6% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 39 years. For every 100 females, there were 92.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 88.3 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $45,945, and the median income for a family was $54,945. Males had a median income of $41,945 versus $30,945 for females. The per capita income for the city was $22,945. About 4.7% of families and 6.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 8.2% of those under age 18 and 5.2% of those age 65 or over.
