History

Willoughby was founded in 1835 by John Willoughby, a surveyor from Connecticut. He purchased the land from the Connecticut Land Company and named the area after himself. The city was incorporated in 1874 and has since grown to become a major suburb of Cleveland.

Willoughby is located at 41°37'17" North, 81°24'17" West (41.6214, -81.4048). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 8.2 square miles, of which 8.1 square miles is land and 0.1 square miles is water.

Willoughby is home to a variety of businesses, including manufacturing, retail, and service industries. The city is also home to a number of corporate headquarters, including the headquarters of the Lubrizol Corporation, a specialty chemicals company.
