West Manchester Summary
West Manchester, Ohio is a small village located in the western part of Preble County, Ohio. It is situated on the banks of the Twin Creek, a tributary of the Great Miami River. The village is located approximately 20 miles east of Dayton and 40 miles west of Cincinnati. The population of West Manchester was 1,093 at the 2010 census.
History
West Manchester was founded in 1817 by a group of settlers from Pennsylvania. The village was originally known as “Twin Creek”, but was later changed to West Manchester in 1820. The village was incorporated in 1837.
The village was a major stop on the Underground Railroad, with many of the local residents helping to hide and transport runaway slaves. The village was also home to a number of abolitionists, including the prominent Quaker, John Rankin.

West Manchester is located at 39°45'25" North, 84°37'45" West (39.756944, -84.629167). According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 0.6 square miles (1.6 km2), all of it land.

West Manchester is a small, rural village with a limited economy. The village is home to a few small businesses, including a grocery store, a hardware store, and a few restaurants. The village is also home to a number of farms, which produce a variety of crops, including corn, soybeans, and wheat.

As of the census of 2010, there were 1,093 people, 441 households, and 298 families residing in the village. The population density was 1,822.5 people per square mile (704.3/km2). There were 471 housing units at an average density of 783.3 per square mile (302.7/km2). The racial makeup of the village was 97.7% White, 0.2% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.2% Asian, 0.2% from other races, and 1.7% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.7% of the population.
There were 441 households, out of which 32.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.6% were married couples living together, 10.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 33.2% were non-families. 28.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 12.7% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.48 and the average family size was 3.04.
In the village, the population was spread out, with 25.7% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 28.2% from 25 to 44, 24.2% from 45 to 64, and 13.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 37 years. For every 100 females, there were 97.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 94.2 males.
The median income for a household in the village was $37,500, and the median income for a family was $45,000. Males had a median income of $31,250 versus $22,500 for females. The per capita income for the village was $17,845.
