Wellington Summary
Wellington is a village located in Lorain County, Ohio, United States. The population was 4,802 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Cleveland-Elyria Metropolitan Statistical Area.
History
The area that is now Wellington was first settled in 1816 by a group of settlers from Connecticut. The village was originally known as "Mud Creek" due to the muddy conditions of the area. In 1832, the village was renamed "Wellington" after the Duke of Wellington, Arthur Wellesley.
The village was officially incorporated in 1867. During the late 19th century, Wellington was a major center for the production of bricks. The village was also home to several factories, including a woolen mill, a sawmill, and a gristmill.
Geography
Wellington is located at 41°12'17" North, 82°7'45" West (41.204722, -82.129167). According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 2.2 square miles (5.7 km2), all land.
Economy
Wellington's economy is largely based on agriculture and manufacturing. The village is home to several factories, including a steel mill, a plastics plant, and a paper mill. The village is also home to several retail stores, restaurants, and other businesses.
Demographics
As of the census of 2010, there were 4,802 people, 1,845 households, and 1,269 families residing in the village. The population density was 2,179.1 people per square mile (841.2/km2). There were 1,976 housing units at an average density of 890.9 per square mile (344.3/km2). The racial makeup of the village was 95.2% White, 0.7% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.5% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 1.3% from other races, and 2.1% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 3.3% of the population.
There were 1,845 households, out of which 33.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.2% were married couples living together, 12.3% had a female householder with no husband present, and 31.7% were non-families. 26.7% of all households were made up of individuals, and 11.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.60 and the average family size was 3.14.
In the village, the population was spread out, with 26.2% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 28.3% from 25 to 44, 22.7% from 45 to 64, and 14.6% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females, there were 93.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 89.2 males.
The median income for a household in the village was $41,944, and the median income for a family was $50,000. Males had a median income of $37,917 versus $25,938 for females. The per capita income for the village was $19,945. About 6.2% of families and 8.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 10.2% of those under age 18 and 6.2% of those age 65 or over.
