Thurston Summary
Thurston is a village located in Licking County, Ohio, United States. The population was 1,093 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Newark, Ohio Metropolitan Statistical Area.
History
Thurston was founded in 1815 by John Thurston, a Revolutionary War veteran. The village was originally known as Thurstontown, but the name was shortened to Thurston in 1837. The village was incorporated in 1867.
Geography
Thurston is located at 40°14'17" North, 82°30'17" West (40.238, -82.504). According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 0.6 square miles (1.6 km2), all land.
Economy
The economy of Thurston is largely based on agriculture and small businesses. The village is home to several small businesses, including a grocery store, a hardware store, a restaurant, and a gas station.
Demographics
As of the census of 2000, there were 1,093 people, 431 households, and 305 families residing in the village. The population density was 1,845.3 people per square mile (715.3/km2). There were 454 housing units at an average density of 767.2 per square mile (296.3/km2). The racial makeup of the village was 98.90% White, 0.09% African American, 0.09% Native American, 0.09% Asian, 0.09% from other races, and 0.73% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.37% of the population.
There were 431 households, out of which 33.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 54.2% were married couples living together, 11.3% had a female householder with no husband present, and 29.7% were non-families. 25.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 11.3% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.54 and the average family size was 3.04.
In the village, the population was spread out, with 26.2% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 30.2% from 25 to 44, 22.2% from 45 to 64, and 13.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females, there were 97.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 94.2 males.
