St Bernard Summary
St. Bernard is a village located in Hamilton County, Ohio, United States. It is a suburb of Cincinnati and is part of the Cincinnati Metropolitan Statistical Area. The population was 5,908 at the 2010 census.
History
St. Bernard was founded in 1817 by a group of German immigrants led by Father Francis de Sales Brunner. The village was named after St. Bernard of Clairvaux, a 12th century French monk. The village was incorporated in 1867.
Geography
St. Bernard is located at 39°7'25" North, 84°30'25" West (39.123611, -84.506944). According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 2.2 square miles (5.7 km2), all land.
Economy
St. Bernard is home to several businesses, including a grocery store, a hardware store, a pharmacy, a bank, and several restaurants. The village is also home to a number of manufacturing companies, including a plastics manufacturer, a metal fabricator, and a printing company.
Demographics
As of the census of 2000, there were 5,908 people, 2,521 households, and 1,619 families residing in the village. The population density was 2,717.2 people per square mile (1,051.2/km2). There were 2,637 housing units at an average density of 1,204.2 per square mile (464.7/km2). The racial makeup of the village was 97.45% White, 0.64% African American, 0.17% Native American, 0.45% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 0.45% from other races, and 0.82% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.17% of the population.
There were 2,521 households, out of which 28.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 48.2% were married couples living together, 12.3% had a female householder with no husband present, and 35.7% were non-families. 30.7% of all households were made up of individuals, and 11.7% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.35 and the average family size was 2.94.
In the village, the population was spread out, with 23.2% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 30.2% from 25 to 44, 22.3% from 45 to 64, and 16.1% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females, there were 91.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 87.3 males.
