South Charleston Summary

South Charleston is a village located in Clark County, Ohio, United States. The population was 2,945 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Springfield, Ohio Metropolitan Statistical Area.

History

South Charleston was founded in 1817 by William and Mary Smith, who purchased the land from the government. The village was originally known as Smith's Station, but was later changed to South Charleston in 1832. The village was incorporated in 1841.
The village was a major stop on the National Road, which was the first federally funded highway in the United States. The road was built in the early 19th century to connect the East Coast with the Midwest. The road was a major factor in the growth of South Charleston, as it brought many travelers and settlers to the area.

The racial makeup of the village was 95.2% White, 0.7% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.7% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 1.2% from other races, and 2.0% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 2.7% of the population.
There were 1,093 households, out of which 33.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 48.2% were married couples living together, 14.3% had a female householder with no husband present, and 32.2% were non-families. 27.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 11.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.50 and the average family size was 3.02.
In the village, the population was spread out, with 25.2% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 28.2% from 25 to 44, 24.2% from 45 to 64, and 14.2% who were 65 years of age or older.
