History

South Amherst was founded in 1818 by settlers from Connecticut. The village was originally known as Amherst, but the name was changed to South Amherst in 1837 to avoid confusion with the nearby village of Amherst. The village was incorporated in 1867.

Geography

South Amherst is located at 41°22′17″N 82°20′45″W (41.371445, -82.345845). According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 0.9 square miles (2.3 km2), all land.

Economy

South Amherst is home to several small businesses, including a grocery store, a hardware store, a pharmacy, and a few restaurants. The village is also home to a number of manufacturing companies, including a plastics manufacturer, a metal fabricator, and a machine shop.

Demographics

As of the census of 2010, there were 1,845 people, 745 households, and 486 families residing in the village. The population density was 2,039.4 people per square mile (788.3/km2). There were 809 housing units at an average density of 890.2 per square mile (344.3/km2). The racial makeup of the village was 97.2% White, 0.7% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.2% Asian, 0.2% from other races, and 1.7% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.2% of the population.
There were 745 households, out of which 28.3% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 46.2% were married couples living together, 12.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 35.7% were non-families. 30.3% of all households were made up of individuals, and 14.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.45 and the average family size was 3.04.
In the village, the population was spread out, with 24.2% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 27.2% from 25 to 44, 24.2% from 45 to 64, and 16.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females, there were 92.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 88.2 males.
