Rocky River Summary

Rocky River is a city located in Cuyahoga County, Ohio, United States. It is a suburb of Cleveland and is located on the shores of Lake Erie. The population was 20,213 at the 2010 census.

History

The area that is now Rocky River was originally inhabited by the Erie Indians. The first white settlers arrived in the area in the early 1800s. The area was originally known as "River Styx" and was part of the Connecticut Western Reserve. The name was changed to Rocky River in 1818, when the first post office was established.
The city was incorporated in 1920 and has since grown to become a thriving suburb of Cleveland. The city is known for its picturesque views of Lake Erie and its many parks and recreational areas.

Geography

Rocky River is located at 41°27′N 81°50′W (41.45, -81.83). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 8.2 square miles (21.2 km2), of which 7.9 square miles (20.5 km2) is land and 0.3 square miles (0.7 km2) is water.

Economy

Rocky River is home to a variety of businesses, including retail stores, restaurants, and professional services. The city is also home to a number of corporate headquarters, including the headquarters of the Cleveland Clinic, KeyBank, and Eaton Corporation.

Demographics

As of the 2010 census, there were 20,213 people, 8,717 households, and 5,717 families residing in the city. The population density was 2,541.3 people per square mile (982.2/km2). There were 9,093 housing units at an average density of 1,148.3 per square mile (444.2/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 92.2% White, 3.2% African American, 0.2% Native American, 2.3% Asian, 0.7% from other races, and 1.4% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 2.2% of the population.
There were 8,717 households, out of which 28.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 54.2% were married couples living together, 9.3% had a female householder with no husband present, and 33.2% were non-families. 28.7% of all households were made up of individuals, and 11.7% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.32 and the average family size was 2.86.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 22.2% under the age of 18, 6.2% from 18 to 24, 25.7% from 25 to 44, 28.2% from 45 to 64, and 17.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 42 years. For every 100 females, there were 91.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 87.7 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $62,917, and the median income for a family was $77,917. Males had a median income of $51,917 versus $37,917 for females. The per capita income for the city was $35,917. About 2.7% of families and 4.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 4.7% of those under age 18 and 4.2% of those age 65 or over.
